In 1880, Mount Calvary Baptist Church was established by Jennie Serepta Dean, the visionary of yesterday. She received her formal education at Thorntion School in Catharpin, Virginia. She lived and worked in Washington, D.C. during the time of the independent Church Movement and became involved with the education of Negroes. She sought to fulfill her mission by establishing Sunday Schools. Her first project was Calvary Sunday School, which became Mount Calvary Baptist Church and is now Greater Mount Calvary Christian Church. Miss Dean later established three other institutions: Dean Divers Baptist Church, Manassas, VA; Prosperity Baptist Church, Conklin, VA; and Dean Middle School, Manassas, VA
