The deacon is the second officer of the church elected by the congregation with the final approval of the Pastor. Deacons are men who are ready, willing, and able to support the framework of the entire church. They should not be new Christians. Deacons should be men full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom. They should have reasonable business knowledge, have a love for people, be able to work with people, have an orderly household, be committed to Christ, be committed to the church, and exhibit a Christian example.

Deacons organized as a governing body within a church is known as a Deacons Board. They are primarily responsible for the practical and service aspects of church life, like caring for members in need, managing finances, and overseeing building upkeep. Deacons also work in support of the pastor, assisting with the church’s ministries and programs.

Biblical origin: The term, deacon, comes from the Greek word “diakonos” which means “servant.”
