ABRIDGED VERSION OF THE DOCTRINE
OF THE SEVENTH DAY CHURCH OF GOD (REFORMED)
The doctrine of the Seventh Day Church of God (Reformed) is Biblically based as there is no other source from which the doctrine of a church should be taken according to 2 Timothy 3:16. Following is a summary of the church’s position on the topics mentioned.
1. BOTH THE OLD AND THE NEW TESTAMENTS ARE RELEVANT
Both Testaments make up the Bible, the inspired words of God, and serve as the foundation of the faith (2 Tim. 3:16).
2. PEOPLE CAN ONLY BE SAVED THROUGH JESUS CHRIST
All those who will inherit eternal life will have to be saved through Jesus Christ and not by the things they do (John 3:16; 2 Cor. 5:21). They will not be saved by good works alone but by the grace of God (Eph. 2:8).
Mankind was made subject to eternal death by the sin/disobedience of Adam (1 Cor. 15:22).
God demands that mankind repents and follows His prescribed laws in order to be in good standing with Him by not sinning (1 John 2:1; 1 John 3:4).
3. THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
The Ten Commandments are not abolished and must be used as a guide for mankind to live a life free from sin (Matt. 5:17; Rev. 22:14; 1 John 3:4).
4. THE SABBATH
The Seventh Day Sabbath was given to mankind by God as a day of rest and was not abolished by Jesus (Gen. 2:3; Ex. 20: 8-11; Mark 2:27; Isaiah 58:13 & 14; Heb 4:4).
The Sabbath is a 24-hour period (sunset to sunset, Lev. 23:32) beginning sunset Friday evening and ending sunset Saturday evening.
5. GOD GAVE MANKIND THE FREEDOM TO EAT CERTAIN KINDS OF MEAT
The scriptures tell of the meats to be eaten and those not to be eaten. The law about clean and unclean animals was given before the book of Leviticus was written (Gen. 7:1&2).
Leviticus 11 provides a detailed description of the types of meat (flesh) that should be eaten.
6. USING ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES
Proverbs 20:1 speaks to the overuse/misuse of alcoholic beverages. Paul told Timothy to use wine for medicinal purposes (1 Tim. 5:23). Alcoholic beverages should not just be used for fun and pleasure.
7. TITHING IS STILL FOR THE CHURCH TODAY
Jesus commended tithing (Matt. 23:23)
8. MARRIAGE IS SUPPORTED BY THE BIBLE BUT DIVORCE AND RE-MARRIAGE IS NOT
Marriage between a man and a woman is supported by the Bible and is the only type of marriage the Bible supports (Gen. 2:21-23, Rom.7:1-3, 1 Cor. 7:10-16 & 39).
9. BAPTISM MUST BE DONE BY IMMERSION AND IN THE NAME, LORD JESUS CHRIST
(Matt. 28:19; John 3:23; Acts 2:38; Acts 8:16, Acts 8:38, Acts19:5). Jesus left us an example as He
too was baptized (Matt. 3:13-16). It is not wrong to be baptized more than once (Acts 19:3-5).
10. THE CHURCH IS TO BE NAMED AFTER THE FAMILY IN HEAVEN
The family in heaven and in earth must have the same name (Eph. 3:14 &15).
Read for emphasis Acts. 20:28, 1 Cor. 1:2; 10:32, 2 Cor. 1:1).
The name therefore should be CHURCH OF GOD.
11. THE HOLY SPIRIT
The Holy Spirit was promised by Jesus to His followers (John 14:16 &17).
Speaking in tongues is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit (Mark 16:17) but it must be done as the Bible directs (1 Cor. 14:26-33). While all God’s children are recipients of the Holy Spirit, not all will speak in tongues just as how not all will perform acts of healing (1 Cor. 12:28-30). The Holy Spirit is given as a Comforter and will lead the church into observing all truth (John 14:26 and 16:13).
12. MIRACLES AND HEALINGS
Jesus told the disciples that signs and wonders would follow those who believe in Him and that miracles would be done in His Name (Mark 16:17&18). However, according to Matt. 7: 21-23, not all who claim to be working miracles in the Name of Jesus are among the saved as they may not be fulfilling the will of God in its entirety.
13. THE EMBLEMS OF THE NEW TESTAMENT
Jesus instituted the celebration of the New Testament with the emblems representing His broken body and His shed blood (Matt. 26:26-29, 1 Cor. 11:23-26).
14. JESUS WAS CRUCIFIED, BUT NOT ON A FRIDAY; RESURRECTED, BUT NOT ON A SUNDAY
Jesus Christ was crucified and resurrected as the Bible says (1 Cor. 15:3&4). Christ said that He would spend three days and three nights in the earth (Matt. 12:40). He was crucified on a Wednesday and was raised on a Saturday evening just before the setting of the sun.
When the followers of Jesus went to the sepulcher, after the Sabbath, they were told that He was not there as He had already risen (Matt. 28:1-6).
15. EASTER IS NOT A CELEBRATION OF THE DEATH OF JESUS
Easter was a time used for the celebration of the return of the sun to begin the spring. All the celebrations and rituals aligned to Easter are rooted in paganism and condemned by the Bible (Jer. 7:17-20, Ezek. 8:13-18). It was adopted by the Roman Church as a celebration and linked to the death of Jesus.
N.B God is against heathen practices being copied and used in worship to Him (Lev. 18:3, Deut. 12:29-32).
16. CHRISTMAS OBSERVANCE IS NOT SCRIPTURAL.
The practice of celebrating Jesus’ birth on December 25 is not in keeping with the teachings of the Bible, as there is no scriptural reference that His birth is to be celebrated.
Christmas was in fact one of the pagan holidays that the Roman Catholic Church adopted in order to keep the pagans in the church. According to Jeremiah 10:2, we are instructed not to follow the practices of the heathen.
A study of the scriptures shows that Shepherds were in the fields when Christ was born which indicates that it could not have been in the winter (Christmas time) (Luke 2:8, Ezra 10:9&13).
17. MAN IS A MORTAL SOUL
God breathed breath into man, and he became a living soul (Gen. 2:7). Human beings as created by God are mortal, subject to death and corruption (Gen. 2:16 & 17, Ezek. 18:20, 1 Cor. 15:42-54).
Of note other living things are also referred to as souls (Job 12:10, Rev.16:3).
18. NEITHER ETERNAL LIFE NOR DEATH BEGINS WHEN ONE DIES
At death, one does not go to a place of torment(hell), nor a place of bliss (heaven); but awaits the resurrection (Dan 12:1 & 2, 2 Cor. 5:10). God has a set time for the judgement of this world (people) and at that time the pronouncement of eternal life or death will be made (Matt. 25:31-34, 41 & 46;
1 Thess. 4:13-18; Hebrews 11:39 & 40).
19. THE RETURN OF CHRIST WILL NOT BE IN A SECRET RAPTURE
Although the exact time of Christ’s return is known only by God the Father (Mark 13:32 & 33), His return will not be in secret.
It will be for all to see (Matt. 24:27, Acts 1:11).
There will be a loud trumpet (1 Thess. 4:16 & 17).
He will return to the Mount of Olives from which He left (Zech. 14:4).
A multitude will accompany Him (Jude 14 & 15).
20. THE SINNERS WILL BE BURNT TO ASHES
The Bible speaks of the wages of sin as Death (Rom. 6:23).
The punishment is everlasting/eternal as it is final and cannot be undone. After being cast into hell fire as their punishment, sinners will eventually be burnt to death (Rev. 20:15).
21. EARTH WILL BE THE HOME OF THE SAVED / ETERNAL LIFE WILL BE SPENT ON EARTH
Jesus stated that no man except He who comes from heaven will be going there (John 3:13).
The Earth will not be left without inhabitants (Matt. 5:5).
The Earth will be made new, purified for the saints (Isa. 66:22, Rev. 21:1, 2 Peter 3:13, Rev. 5:9 & 10)
22. THE CHRISTIAN’S ATTIRE AND ADORNMENT
Based on the teachings of the Bible, and the actions of bible characters, the Church does not support:
the wearing of Jewelry nor make-up (Gen. 35:4; 2 Kings 9:30; Isaiah 3:16-20; Jer. 4:30; 1 Peter 2:9 & 10; 1 Peter 3: 1-5).
the wearing of men’s garments (pants) by women nor the wearing of women’s garments by men (Deut. 22:5)
the wearing of Tattoo (Lev. 19:28)
Women worshipping with their heads uncovered nor men worshipping with their heads covered (1 Cor. 11: 4-5)
The Church follows the advice given in 1 Timothy 2:9 and 1 Peter 3:3.
